Stone Horse Maquette

So I still don't have a job, but I've been trying to keep myself busy with a lot of different projects. I'm posting a sketch diary over at http://subpomandsleepyhedge.blogspot.com/. I'm also working on some storyboards, birthday presents, and this maquette!

The first sketch I did, above, was inspired by a dream I had about these massive stone horses that carried riders across their backs through the water. I did full concept sketch and got lots of help from friends, helping me refine the shape and add some neat details! The final concept sketch is the one I did in pen.

The maquette armature is made of aluminum wire and apoxie. It also has joints at the neck and shoulders so the head and front legs can be taken off and sculpted separately. To scale the armature correctly, I printed out a large picture of the stone horse and compared the armature to the drawing!

I added some thin mesh for the tail fin, and began sculpting a very rough environment on the base. The environment will eventually be some flat, water-washed stones, but for now I just wanted the vague shape of the stones. I also added some wire sticking from the bottom so I could attach it to the horse's legs and help it stand better...

Unfortunately, the aluminum wire I used for the armature isn't very strong, and the thin legs are already bending under the weight! But I have a Plan B, so it should turn out okay. And if THAT doesn't work, I also have a Plan C.

That's right.

I'll post more progress shots soon!

Facebook Sketch Requests

I made a post on Facebook asking some friends to request sketches of different types of monsters /creatures/characters. Here are the results!

A squirrel-like creature for Kirsten.

Tony requested a, and I quote, "wolf wearing a leather jacket and some aviator shades..moon reflecting off of them. The moon looking down on that wolf like 'DAMN! I just made awesome happen!'"

Jazz wanted a picture of Sanchez, the rocketplane flying chihuahua. This pretty much looks like a pre-school get drew it in MS Paint, but I love it.

Christina wanted a fox!

Neil requested a robot hippo.

Jess wanted a picture of an otter, so I went with a Redwall type otter. You can never go wrong with Redwall!

Jill wanted the Loch Ness Monster!

Jessica wanted a heron! This is a spooky heron.

Mark requested a lot of stuff! I'll probably get around to sketching all his ideas at some point or another, but in the meantime, I decided to go with his suggestion of a Hunter-Iguana.

Angela wanted a picture of everyone's favorite Elder God, Cthulu!

And last but not least, my mom wanted a frog monster, so I drew a horned frog as an evil king. Or something. (She didn't like it.)

Thank you everyone, this was a lot of fun!

PreviewI

Here's a little preview of a project I'm working on. If you're a nerd and familiar with Facebook at all, you can probably guess what these are going to turn out to be. I've got a lot more work to do on it before it's ready! And, of course, a quick disclaimer; everything South Park belongs to Matt and Trey, etc, they are not mine, blah blah blah.

Dessert Trio?

I KNOW WHAT TRIO MEANS, OKAY???

Bucking Dino and Progress Pictures

I've been working on this thing for a couple of days now and I'm FINALLY finished! It bothers me how some parts are messy and some are super detailed, but I really wanted to move on to other stuff. Anyway, some progress shots.

Rough sketch done on paper. I didn't even bother scanning it since I was just gonna go over it in Photoshop anyway. I just took a picture of it. Yay laziness!

Here's a quick background I did.

And there's the pretty much finished piece. I added a little texture, and voila!

A Bucking Dino.

Logo Stuff

I drew these up for a friend who wanted a logo for his Steam club. The first one was just the rough draft, the second one is finished.

More Ink Practice

Here's some dragons! I don't like the first one that much, but I posted it anyway, because I'd like to post the good and the ugly on this site.

The second one I'm more of a fan of. I forget the name of this creature, it's some kind of ancient dragon thingy. I believe that's the technical term.

More Squid Items

The purple squid is a commission squid that I just sent out, and the blue squid is my Squidboo. He's eying the purple squid with discomfort.

I jacked up the contrast levels on this photo like crazy because IT LOOKS COOL OKAY?!

Anyway, squids and any other plushies/pictures are available for commission unless otherwise stated. If you'd like to request a commission, just email me at madisonhenline@gmail.com
